Technology for Worldwide Interoperability Microwave Access (Wimax)) which is a broadband wireless access technology (broadband wireless access or BWA) with high-speed access and wide-reaching is predicted to grow more slowly in Indonesia.
"WiMAX does not have the mobility to provide a broadband connection to the remote villages in Indonesia," said Senior Director, Services, GSM Association (GSMA), Jaikishan Rajaraman in his press statement here on Monday.
He added that, if compared with competitors such as 3G/HSPA technology, WiMAX is not yet able to offer Mobile Broadband connection that provides solutions range up to the outposts of the island, because they still keep playing in coverage more specific and more positive role as a complement.
According to him, until now, only HSPA technology that can reach into any area and has real mobility capabilities through a variety of devices available today.
"Furthermore, WiMAX is better known simply as a substitute for fixed line broadband so can not offer true mobility," he said.
According to Ovum, a leading industry analysts, WiMAX will only control less than 5 percent of 1.5bn joint fixed and mobile broadband access in markets of developing countries in 2014.
"Penetration of WiMAX has been very slow according to analyst firm Maravedis, there are about 200 WiMAX networks, and about 200 networks that are still in the trial period, in 135 countries and globally only serve 4.73 million subscribers," he said.
If compared with the competitors that HSPA has more than 200 million HSPA connections with the growth rate of more than 9 million per month, all over the world, then Wimax already very far behind, he said.
Currently there are only about 120 WiMAX devices have now been certified or far behind compared with more than 1800 for the HSPA.
"HSPA Ecosystem enables the creation of large economies of scale and also because of tight competition, so there are many choices for consumers and businesses," he said.
WiMAX itself is an evolution from previous BWA technology with the features of the more interesting that deliver high data speeds and is the technology with open standards.
Wimax technology is not proprietary to achieve 70 Mbps data speeds that is claimed to be applied for broadband connection "last mile", or backhaul.
